Muzeum Geologiczne PAN, Kraków

Muzeum Geologiczne PAN is a geological museum of the Polish Academy of Sciences at Senacka 1 and 3. Its collections reach back to 1865 and include Poland’s largest meteorite collection. The building also preserves a remarkable history as a former Carmelite complex, prison, and criminal court.

Muzeum Geologiczne PAN is the Geological Museum of the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Geological Sciences, housed at Senacka 1 and 3 beside the Archaeological Museum. Its collections have been assembled since 1865, passing through several Kraków scholarly institutions before becoming part of today’s museum. The address has an unusually layered past.

From the early seventeenth century it belonged to the Discalced Carmelite monastery and church of St Michael. After the Carmelites were moved to Czerna in 1797, the monastic buildings became a prison; in 1872 the church was demolished for a criminal court. In 1880, the building hosted the first mass trial of Polish socialists, with Ludwik Waryński as the principal defendant.

A commemorative plaque was later installed on the wall for the trial’s seventieth anniversary. Inside, geology takes over: 132 documentary collections, 72 comparative collections, and two teaching collections. The museum holds Poland’s largest meteorite collection, with 333 specimens.

Among its prized objects is a large cluster of halite crystals from Wieliczka’s Crystal Caves, acquired in 1901; individual crystals reach ten centimetres. The permanent display explores the geology of the Kraków area north of the Carpathians, from rock layers and fossils to landforms and tectonics.
