Muzeum Archeologiczne, Wrocław

Muzeum Archeologiczne is Wrocław’s museum of Silesian archaeology, housed in the intact medieval Municipal Arsenal. Founded in 1815, it ranks among Europe’s oldest archaeological museums. Its three-floor displays range from Ice Age animal remains and prehistoric tools to reconstructions of medieval Silesian life.

Muzeum Archeologiczne occupies this medieval Municipal Arsenal, one of the few medieval buildings in Wrocław preserved intact. Founded in 1815 as the Royal Museum of Art and Antiquities, it has operated continuously through wars, shifts of national rule, and political change. That history places it among Europe’s oldest archaeological museums.

Inside, the museum concentrates on the archaeology of Silesia. Its permanent exhibition spreads through three floors, tracing settlement in the region from the Palaeolithic to the growth of medieval towns through excavated finds and reconstructions of homes and burial places. The collections reach back half a million years and continue into the nineteenth century.

A particularly tangible reconstruction is a life-size wooden house with a thatched roof, representing a town dwelling in Silesia between the tenth and thirteenth centuries. You can also encounter mammoth and woolly-rhinoceros bones, stone tools, Iron Age objects, and a recreated iron-smelting furnace. The museum still adds material recovered during archaeological work ahead of construction projects, especially in Wrocław’s Old Town. The Arsenal’s courtyard also becomes a venue for concerts, theatre, festivals, and temporary exhibitions, including contemporary art.
