Mur des je t'aime, Paris
The Wall of Love is the tiled mural set into Jehan Rictus garden square in Montmartre. Its enamelled lava surface carries “I love you” 311 times, written across 250 languages, with rarer tongues such as Navajo, Inuit, Bambara, and Esperanto included. The work measures 40 square metres and contains 612 tiles; Frédéric Baron and Claire Kito created it in 2000, with Daniel Boulogne also involved in its construction.
Look at the red fragments scattered across the surface: they represent pieces of a broken heart, designed to come together as a complete heart. Baron began by gathering expressions from his brother and people around him, while Claire Kito, a calligrapher, arranged the different scripts for enamel plates. The wall turns an emblem of separation into a support for love.
