Miradouro Nossa Senhora do Monte, Lisbon

Miradouro Nossa Senhora do Monte is a belvedere beside the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte, opening onto a wide Lisbon panorama. From this terrace, the view includes the Tagus estuary, São Jorge Castle, part of Baixa, the Mouraria district, and the Graça church; it also reaches toward Bairro Alto and Monsanto. The small chapel beside the terrace was founded in 1147 and dedicated to São Gens, a bishop whom local tradition identifies as a martyr at this site.

This hill was the camp chosen by Afonso Henriques during the conquest of Lisbon. The belvedere occupies the chapel’s forecourt and underwent two renovations during the twentieth century. Its setting at the highest point of Graça makes the outlook especially expansive, with the castle and Mouraria spread across the city below.
