Mercat del Born, Barcelona

Mercat del Born is the former public market enclosed by a remarkable iron framework, now housing El Born, Museu d’Història de Barcelona. Its present role brings archaeological remains, exhibitions, and activities together around the story of the siege of 1713-1714. The building was designed by Josep Fontserè i Mestre and belongs to the arquitectura del ferro tradition.

Look at the long roof and the repeated metal supports: the structure uses cast-iron columns and wrought-iron members to create a spacious interior without solid partitions. The market opened in 1878 and served as Barcelona’s wholesale produce market until 1971, after which trading moved to Mercabarna. Its later story is even more striking.

Excavation work in 2002 uncovered extensive remains of the former Ribera neighbourhood beneath the floor. Those ruins belonged to the part of the district demolished after the War of Succession to make room for the Ciutadella military complex. The market’s roof now protects this archaeological landscape, with part of it visible to visitors and cultural spaces arranged around it.

In 2013, the restored building opened as a centre devoted to history and memory. As you examine the elegant iron canopy, you are looking at a market that preserves an earlier city beneath its feet.
