Mercat de Rojas Clemente, Valencia

Mercat de Rojas Clemente is a municipal market in Valencia, located in the plaza that shares its name. The building dates from 1963 and opened on 5 December 1963. Gelabert and Ribas designed it in just five months, with private backing from businessman Eusebio Santos Martínez.

Its purpose was to bring together the neighbourhood’s vendors who had previously traded in an open-air market at Plaza de San Sebastián. Today, the market contains food shops and hospitality businesses. Its exterior walls gained artistic decoration in 2017 through a project shaped by public participation, adding a creative layer to this working local market. The building is also among the best-known places in the El Botánico neighbourhood, close to the Quart Towers and the IVAM.
