Mercado de Triana, Seville
Mercado de Triana is a food market on Plaza del Altozano, in Seville’s Triana district. A market has occupied this plot since 1823, although the present facilities date from 2001. Beneath that modern market lies an older chapter: in 1800, the ruined Castle of San Jorge stood here.
During work on a stall in 1983, remains of the castle came to light, and an archaeological area opened beside the market in 2009. Inside, you find produce from across the region, including oranges from the Aljarafe and melons and watermelons from Huelva, alongside fish, bread, and Andalusian specialities. Some sellers continue family-growing traditions that reach back more than 100 years. The food area adds bars and restaurants serving fresh local dishes, while another section presents flamenco clothing, dance accessories, and handmade ceramics by local craftspeople.
