Mercado da Ribeira, Lisbon
Mercado da Ribeira is a public market for food and other goods at Cais do Sodré in Lisbon, with about 10,000 square metres of covered space. Its architect was João António Piloto. The market opened on 1 January 1882 and later underwent repeated alterations and expansions.
On 7 June 1893, a fire destroyed its eastern section. In 2000, wholesale trading ended here, although retail continued. A new first floor opened in 2001, bringing restaurants, craft shops, and a broader social, cultural, and recreational role.
Since 18 May 2014, the building has also housed a Time Out food market with 30 restaurants, offering dishes ranging from fish and meat to sushi, cakes, and ice cream. The concept created here is intended for wider use by the Time Out Group, beginning with London and New York.
