Mauerpark, Berlin
Mauerpark is a long public park shaped by the former Berlin Wall, and its paths follow the old border line along Schwedter Straße. The park opened in 1994 from plans by landscape designer Gustav Lange, after local residents had begun planting the site in 1990. Its history is unusually visible: a 300 m section of the former inner security wall stands on the stadium embankment, while paving along Schwedter Straße marks foundations from an earlier border installation.
At the Bernauer Straße entrance, an archaeological display exposes the foundation of a vehicle barrier. Look for the rough, pale granite blocks used throughout the park: they form boundaries, provide seats, and frame a circular area with a large stone table. In the southern section, a broad lawn is enclosed by an amphitheatre built into the embankment.
Mauerpark is especially known for its Sunday flea market and its street musicians. The amphitheatre also became the setting for the Bearpit Karaoke Show, which began in 2009 and draws thousands of people on Sunday afternoons when the weather permits. This park turns a former guarded border strip into a place for markets, music, sport, and everyday leisure.
