Mariacka is a historic street in Gdańsk’s Main City, running through the former Mariacka quarter. As you walk along it, the route begins beside St Mary’s Basilica and continues toward the Motława, ending at Mariacka Gate. The street is closed to general motor traffic, so its character comes from the continuous line of façades and their raised entrance platforms.
These forecourts are a defining feature of Gdańsk architecture; look for their stone steps, balustrades, and enclosed edges as you move along the street. Its earlier setting was much wetter, and in the 16th century Mariacka was shorter because the ground was marshy. After Mariacka Gate was built, the route could extend farther. Archaeology has also found numerous medieval shoemakers’ workshops beside the gate, giving this elegant street a practical craft history beneath its polished appearance.
