Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik

Lovrijenac is the fortress rising on a rocky outcrop beyond Dubrovnik’s city walls. It is also a theatre, and its identity is tied to resistance against Venetian control. The fort stands 37 metres above sea level, with a triangular plan arranged across three terraces.

Its seaward walls can reach 12 metres in thickness, while those turned toward the city measure only 60 centimetres. Two drawbridges lead through the entrance, where a Latin inscription declares that liberty cannot be bought with all the world’s wealth. The most striking story belongs to its beginning: when Venice prepared materials to build a stronghold here, Dubrovnik’s people completed their own fort in just three months.

The arriving Venetian ships had to sail back with their building supplies. Shakespeare’s Hamlet later became a defining symbol of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival here.
