Ku czci Zwierząt Rzeźnych, Wrocław

Ku czci Zwierząt Rzeźnych is a monument made up of farm animals gathered along the Old Butchers’ Stalls. The sculptures are cast in bronze: a goose with an egg, a goat with droppings, a pig, a piglet, a duck, a rooster, a rabbit, and a calf. The rooster is deliberately oversized and stands apart on its own plinth, while a pavement plaque carries the dedication “Ku czci Zwierząt Rzeźnych / Konsumenci”.

This lane served Wrocław’s meat trade for some seven hundred years. Butchers’ stalls were established here from 1242, and the surviving buildings later became a setting for artists’ studios and galleries. The animal group began with four sculptures in 1997; the calf joined in June 2017 because a full-sized cow would have been too large.
