Kościół Świętego Michała Archanioła, Wrocław

Kościół Świętego Michała Archanioła is a Roman Catholic parish church in Wrocław’s Muchobór Wielki district. Recorded in 1347, it combines a medieval chancel and later enlargement with a brick-and-sandstone structure, historic murals, a late-Gothic Madonna triptych, and fifteenth-century sculptures.

Kościół Świętego Michała Archanioła is the Roman Catholic parish church of Muchobór Wielki, dedicated to the Archangel Michael. A church was recorded here in 1347, while the chancel of today’s building took shape around 1400 and the church grew again around 1500. Its walls combine brick and sandstone, and the chancel ends in three sides beneath an intricate net-pattern vault.

The nave is a square space, covered by cross vaulting and supported by a slim stone pillar twisted like a spiral. Between 1912 and 1916, builders extended the nave southward, deliberately matching the earlier scheme. The building also preserves remarkable layers of sacred art: around 1470, painters created saints on the wall of the original nave; in 1605, Renaissance murals of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary were added to the chancel vault. Among the furnishings is a carved late-Gothic Madonna triptych from about 1480, alongside several individual Gothic sculptures made during the fifteenth century.
