Kościół Świętego Jerzego, Wrocław

Kościół Świętego Jerzego is Brochów’s parish church, built in nineteen ten and nineteen eleven to designs by Oskar Hoßfeld. This Neo-Romanesque basilica follows the model of Saint Michael’s in Hildesheim and preserves painted ceilings, stained glass from nineteen fifty-nine, and an altar relief of the four Evangelists.

Kościół Świętego Jerzego is the parish church of Saint George the Martyr and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, serving Brochów. Built in nineteen ten and nineteen eleven to plans by Berlin architect Oskar Hoßfeld, it was conceived in Neo-Romanesque, a revival of the solid, round-arched architecture of the medieval period. Its design deliberately recalls Saint Michael’s Church in Hildesheim.

The building is a three-aisled basilica laid out as a Latin cross, with a tower containing the organ gallery. It measures thirty-four metres long and seventeen metres wide, and accommodates more than a thousand worshippers. Notice the pale sandstone used for the portal, windows, cornices, and the supports inside.

August Oetken painted the wooden ceiling of the central nave with Moses, Christ, and Saints Peter and Paul; above the apse, a gilded vault carries Saint George himself. The present stained glass dates from nineteen fifty-nine and was designed by Wrocław professor Stanisław Kopystyński. The main altar, carved in oak and made from white Belgian limestone, bears a relief of the four Evangelists; the pulpit carries figures of the four Fathers of the Church.
