Kopiec Kościuszki, Kraków
Before you rises Kopiec Kościuszki, an earth mound created in Kraków as a tribute to the Polish national leader Tadeusz Kościuszko. Kraków’s residents chose the enduring form of the city’s much older Krak and Wanda mounds for this memorial. The project began on the sixteenth of October eighteen twenty, funded by Polish donors living under foreign rule; volunteers from every walk of life built it over the following years.
Construction ended on the twenty-fifth of October eighteen twenty-three. Follow the winding route around the grassy mass: it climbs toward a compact viewing platform. Inside the mound are urns containing soil gathered from battlefields in Poland and America where Kościuszko fought.
At the summit, a granite stone from the Tatra Mountains carries the simple dedication, “Kościuszce” — to Kościuszko. The brick fort enclosure gives this memorial an unexpected military frame. Austrian authorities built a citadel here during the nineteenth century, using the hill as a strategic observation point.
Much later, intense rain damaged the mound in nineteen ninety-seven; restoration brought drainage and a waterproof layer that preserved its shape. From the summit, the Vistula and Kraków spread into a wide panorama.
