Konditori La Glace, Copenhagen
Konditori La Glace is a Copenhagen pastry shop on Skoubogade, known for its cakes and long history. It opened on 8 October 1870, making it one of Denmark’s oldest establishments of its kind. The shop is especially associated with layer cakes, with a particularly famous creation called Sportkage.
That cake was devised for Otto Benzon’s satirical theatre work Sportsmænd, which premiered at Folketeatret on 18 November 1891. The business has also passed through a remarkable family story: Merethe Stagetorn acquired it in 1978, her daughter Marianne took over its management in 1989 and later bought the company, and in 2025 Marianne transferred ownership to her daughters Maria and Laura. The original shop remains the focus after an attempted Nyhavn branch closed following a few years.
