Kolumna Chrystusa Króla Wszechświata, Wrocław

The Kolumna Chrystusa Króla Wszechświata is the Millennium Column, a monument to Christ on Cathedral Square. It was created to mark one thousand years of the Wrocław bishopric, founded in the year one thousand. The column rises in black and pink granite, carrying a bronze figure of Christ as King.

Notice the papal tiara crowning the figure: this is Christ presented in royal dignity, rather than in suffering. Priest Czesław Mazur designed the monument, and the Lower Silesian sculptor Janusz Kucharski made the statue. Its dedication took place on the twenty-third of June two thousand, led by Cardinal Edmund Szoka as papal legate.

The Latin inscription on the column makes the purpose explicit: Wrocław’s diocesan and religious clergy dedicate it to Christ, Redeemer of the world, for the diocese’s millennium. This small monument condenses a much longer local story. Wrocław has been a Roman Catholic diocesan seat since the year one thousand, and Cathedral Square places that anniversary in the historic ecclesiastical heart of the city.
