Karmelitermarkt, Vienna
Karmelitermarkt is a working market in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt, officially established in 1891 and set within the Karmeliter quarter. Its story reaches back further: an earlier market began on 15 October 1671, created after the authorities sought new residents for an emptied district. That original site stood near the Carmelite church until 1888, when the traders moved into a nearby street.
Since 1910, the market has occupied this broad area enclosed by Leopoldsgasse, Haidgasse, Krummbaumgasse and Im Werd. War destruction erased the market, but rebuilding brought about 110 new stalls in 1949. Today, you find produce sellers, a fishmonger and an Islamic butcher among the stands.
The market also hosts cultural projects, and its food scene includes Georgian and Turkish specialities. Its unusual strength is the mix of everyday shopping, local producers and public life.
