Kaplica pw. Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, Sopot

The compact brick chapel joined to the larger church is the older heart of this Roman Catholic parish, dedicated to Saint Andrew Bobola and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was raised during eighteen sixty-nine and eighteen seventy in Neo-Gothic, a nineteenth-century revival of medieval church design, through unpaid work by local Kashubians. Its dedication ceremony took place on the fourteenth of August eighteen seventy.

Before the war, worship here served both Polish and German Catholics, earning the chapel its local nickname as the Polish chapel. Once Sopot’s parish church of Our Lady Star of the Sea opened during nineteen oh two, this chapel was used chiefly by Kashubians and Polish summer visitors. Within its furnishings are wooden figures: a crucified Christ from the late fifteenth century and a Madonna from the early sixteenth century.

The present parish church and its presbytery and parish house were added during nineteen eighty-five through nineteen eighty-eight. Adam Haupt designed that later church, and a group of two hundred eighty-five Filipinos joined the construction work. The joined structures preserve a small community chapel within a much expanded parish home.
