Kamienica Pod Złotym Pokojem, Wrocław

Kamienica Pod Złotym Pokojem is a townhouse on Wrocław’s Market Square, within the northern row known as Targ Łakoci. Masonry building occupied this plot by the late Middle Ages, and the cellar retains clues to a medieval home arranged in paired bays. By the close of the fifteenth century, the property belonged to the innkeeper Andreas Böhme.

Beginning in seventeen twenty-six, Anna Rosina Rudolphin reshaped it with a Baroque façade, spread across four window bays and finished with a lofty gable. A later remodelling in eighteen seventy-four raised the house to five storeys beneath a flat roof. Wartime fighting destroyed it completely; Jacek Cydzik’s reconstruction of nineteen fifty-five returned a version of its earlier Baroque character, without restoring every former detail.

The building you see now has four storeys, a gable with curling volutes, and giant pilasters framing the façade. Let the repeating bays carry your eye across the plasterwork. An entrance to the ground-floor rooms was reinstated in the eastern outer bay during the period from two thousand eight to two thousand ten.
