Kamienica Pod Złotym Karpiem, Kraków

Kamienica Pod Złotym Karpiem is a historic town house at Main Market Square 10 in Kraków’s Old Town. Begun in the fourteenth century and expanded over two more centuries, it later housed royal painter Tomasz Dolabella. Its surviving first-floor paintings include landscape scenes by Jan Wincenty Kopff.

At Main Market Square 10, Kamienica Pod Złotym Karpiem is a protected historic town house in Kraków’s Old Town. Its story starts in the first half of the fourteenth century; a second storey followed in the fifteenth century and a third at the beginning of the sixteenth. Wealthy merchant families held it through much of the sixteenth century, before a major refurbishment late in that century.

In sixteen oh two, the royal painter Tomasz Dolabella lived here. The house has repeatedly been reshaped rather than frozen in one age. A fire destroyed its rear wings in eighteen fifty, and they were rebuilt the following year.

The Hess family commissioned a nineteenth-century reconstruction that altered the ground floor, roof and façade. Then, in nineteen thirty, Jerzy Struszkiewicz designed boldly modern shop windows for the ground floor. Much of the earlier interior decoration has disappeared, but the first floor still preserves a ceiling and Renaissance and Neoclassical wall paintings.

Around eighteen thirty, Jan Wincenty Kopff painted landscape scenes there. The building entered the heritage register on the twenty-third of November nineteen sixty-five.
