Kamienica Pod Złotym Jeleniem, Wrocław
Kamienica Pod Złotym Jeleniem is a historic townhouse on the northern frontage of Wrocław’s Market Square, within the section called Targ Łakoci. Its slender façade rises through four storeys into a gable with three further levels, where curled volute ornaments soften the outline. Beneath that later silhouette is a much older address: its story reaches back to the late medieval period.
In the fifteenth century, goldsmiths lived and likely worked here, making this home part dwelling and part workshop. The trade then gave way to medicine: during the sixteenth century, the house contained a pharmacy and was known as the pharmacy of Targ Łakoci well into the following century. Pharmacist Johann Georg Zechner reshaped the building extensively in seventeen thirty-five, adding taller accommodation and reorganising its interior around a kitchen and stairwell.
War left the house burned out in nineteen forty-five. Witold Skowronek’s reconstruction, completed in nineteen fifty-four, retained the façade’s four-bay rhythm while recovering an earlier pattern of openings at the lower levels. What you see is therefore a carefully remade survivor, carrying traces of craft, commerce, and recovery in a single narrow plot.
