Kamienica Pod Złotym Dzbanem, Wrocław

Kamienica Pod Złotym Dzbanem is a medieval townhouse on Wrocław Market Square’s southern frontage, opposite Piwnica Świdnicka. Its rear brewery once supplied White Ram beer through an underground barrel tunnel, which still survives as storage space. Rebuilt after severe wartime damage, its present form recalls around eighteen hundred.

Kamienica Pod Złotym Dzbanem is the medieval townhouse at number twenty-two on the south side of Wrocław’s Market Square. Its neighbour is the House Under the Green Pumpkin, and the entrance to Piwnica Świdnicka faces it across the square. Behind this apparently compact frontage lies a building that grew in stages: a single thirteenth-century house once occupied the plots now numbered twenty-two and twenty-three.

Between the later fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, builders filled the gap beside it and joined a newer house to the older one. The most unexpected remnant is underground. In fifteen nineteen, the rear wing on Junkierska Street held a brewery making White Ram beer.

A tunnel ran from that brewery beneath the front house to the vestibule of Piwnica Świdnicka, allowing barrels to travel without crossing the square. The passage survives as storage space. Notice the sandstone facing at ground level.

The house suffered severe damage in nineteen forty-five and was rebuilt during the nineteen fifties to recall its appearance around eighteen hundred. Above, the second-floor windows carry triangular pediments supported on brackets, while four dormers break the roofline.
