kamienica Pod Złotą Trójcą, Wrocław
Kamienica Pod Złotą Trójcą is a historic townhouse on the Market Square’s northern run of buildings, along the stretch called Targ Łakoci. It also carries the name Pharmacy Under the Double Golden Eagle. The building you see is a reconstruction: wartime destruction in 1945 left it severely damaged, and Emil Kaliski rebuilt it in 1955.
The rebuilt house has three storeys beneath a mansard roof, giving its silhouette a compact, old-fashioned character. Its earlier incarnation reached back to the late medieval period, when a house stood here from the latter part of the fourteenth century into the fifteenth. Craftsmen shaped much of its early story.
The property belonged to goldsmith Elias and later his wife Barbara; in 1427 it passed to fellow goldsmith Hennyng Weypusch, a leading figure in Wrocław’s guild. Merchant Andreas Forni commissioned a major remodelling in 1775, but the building was demolished in 1872 and replaced by a taller façade. The pharmacy has occupied this address since 1951, after moving here from Kurzy Targ.
Its earlier home had housed a pharmacy continuously since the medieval era. The reason “Double” entered the eagle’s name remains unknown.
