Kamienica Pod Okiem Opatrzności, Kraków
Kamienica Pod Okiem Opatrzności is the historic townhouse at Floriańska Street six in Kraków’s Old Town. Its name comes from the plaster emblem in the attic: an eye of Providence, approached by lambs on either side. The house you see was built for Jan and Elżbieta Satalecki in eighteen thirty-six, after an earlier house on this plot had collapsed.
The broad projecting part of the façade gathers the composition around its balcony. This is a restrained classical design, with window surrounds and plant-patterned bands adding decoration without overwhelming the wall. Behind the street front, the owners added a low rear wing at the same time.
A brick stable later appeared in the courtyard, and the rear wings were joined and enlarged for Mojżesz Kornblum. The townhouse entered the heritage register in March nineteen sixty-six.
