Kamienica Pod Konikiem, Kraków
Kamienica Pod Konikiem is the historic townhouse at Rynek Główny thirty-nine, within Kraków’s Old Town. The engraved horse silhouette on the façade is the small detail that supplies its name. Its oldest form took shape during the fourteenth century, then a remodelling in the sixteenth century left Gothic-Renaissance windows in the large rear room.
During the early seventeenth century, the house was enlarged and comprehensively rebuilt, gaining an unusual outdoor stairway. The façade now comes from a neoclassical remodelling undertaken for merchant J. Fischer in eighteen fifty-four.
Jan Matejko kept a painting studio here for several months in eighteen sixty-one. Later, wooden galleries survived when the street house and its wings became a larger complex, and a cabaret performed here during the nineteen thirties.
