Kamienica Pod Jeleniem, Kraków
This is Kamienica Pod Jeleniem, a historic townhouse at Main Market Square thirty-six, where the square meets Sławkowska Street. It dates from around fourteen hundred. By the middle of the sixteenth century, it contained an inn called Pod Jeleniem.
Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Tsar Nicholas the First both stayed here. The house also carries the name Ludwikowska, recalling the Ludwig family who owned it. Its walls entered the heritage register on January twelfth, nineteen thirty-one.
Let the masonry frontage carry the quiet atmosphere of a place made for arrivals and departures. The remarkable detail is how much travel passed through this single address: Goethe and Nicholas the First were received beneath the same roof. Today, it remains a protected historic building within Kraków’s Old Town.
