Kamienica Pod Ewangelistami, Kraków

Kamienica Pod Ewangelistami is the historic townhouse occupying the corner at Rynek Główny 21 and Bracka 1. Its origins reach back to the 14th century, and by the 15th century its interior had the arrangement associated with a Kraków burgher’s house. Look at the façade plaque: it records a bank’s presence, while another plaque commemorates the death of Władysław Orkan in this building.

The house later became a city residence for patrician families. Its courtyard once gained an early Baroque arcaded gallery, and a portico decorated with figures of the four Evangelists was added before 1688. After the fire of 1850, the building was altered to a design by K. Szydłowski. A branch of the Mortgage Joint-Stock Bank opened here in 1867, and banking use continues in the building today.
