Kamienica Mierzejewskich, Kraków

Kamienica Mierzejewskich is a historic town house at Szczepańska Street number three in Kraków’s Old Town. Its fabric reaches back to the early fourteenth century, while its façade records Baroque, classical, and eclectic alterations. A pointed Gothic gateway portal and rusticated ground floor preserve traces of its earlier history.

Kamienica Mierzejewskich is the historic town house at number three on Szczepańska Street, in Kraków’s Old Town. At its entrance, the pointed Gothic gateway portal survives from an earlier phase; Gothic is the medieval tradition of pointed arches. The building now has three upper floors beneath a flat roof, with classical details and surviving older features including rusticated treatment across the ground floor.

Its story begins in the early fourteenth century, when it was a one-storey house. A further floor and a shallow rear section came in the fifteenth century, followed by a rear annexe. On the eighth of September, fifteen twenty-three, Maciej Miechowita died here—a physician who also wrote, studied geography, and chronicled history.

The façade was reshaped in the first half of the eighteenth century in Baroque fashion, a theatrical European style, while a third floor and internal stair were added. Later, I. Mierzejewski gave the front a classical character, drawing on the orderly vocabulary of ancient Greece and Rome.

In eighteen sixty-nine, a fourth floor arrived and the façade became eclectic, blending historical styles. The house entered the heritage register on the thirteenth of May, nineteen sixty-six.
