Kamienica Krauzowska, Kraków
Kamienica Krauzowska, on Saint John Street twelve in Kraków’s Old Town, is a protected historic townhouse. Let the gateway hold your attention: its stone surround, rounded arch, carved keystone, and timber double doors make the entrance feel deliberately ceremonial. The door boards form a herringbone-and-diamond pattern, while the fan-shaped metal grille carries floral ornament and the date sixteen forty-seven.
Above it, paired windows and Latin inscriptions preserve another layer of the house’s long public face. The building began in the later fourteenth century, initially with stonework along part of the structure and timber construction elsewhere. Brick walls soon replaced that lighter fabric, and the cellars expanded into substantial chambers.
In sixteen eleven, Zygmunt Alantse commissioned its transformation into a Renaissance home for a wealthy urban family, adding another storey, a grand stair, a rear wing, and arcades around the courtyard. Krzysztof Krauze acquired the house in sixteen forty-five, giving it the name used today. After periods of decline and changing owners, Klemens Bąkowski’s will transferred it to Kraków’s historical society in nineteen thirty-eight. The society still uses it for offices and meeting rooms.
