Jardines de Murillo, Seville

Jardines de Murillo is a public garden beside Santa Cruz, joined to the landscaped Paseo de Catalina de Ribera. Its present form took shape at the beginning of the twentieth century, and the two gardens received shared cultural protection in 2002. The grounds cover 8,500 square metres, with paths enclosing five circular spaces.

In 1911, sections of the old wall and the boundary of the Retiro orchard were removed here to create a planted route connecting Santa Cruz with the historic ring road. Juan Talavera y Heredia later brought Roman and Visigothic capitals from the municipal archaeological collection into the design between 1914 and 1915; almost all of those capitals were stolen. The circular space dedicated to painter José García Ramos opened in 1923, with tiles made by several artists. Its name honours the painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.
