Jardim do Príncipe Real, Lisbon

Jardim do Príncipe Real is a garden whose romantic layout was created in the nineteenth century. [articleExtractPt] Around the octagonal lake, flowerbeds and shrubs give the space a formal rhythm, while the mature trees make the garden feel enclosed. Beneath this setting lies the Patriarchal Water Reservoir, a subterranean work completed in 1863.

[articleExtractPt] Its chamber has an octagonal plan, 31 pillars reaching 9.25 metres, and room for 880 cubic metres of water. [articleExtractPt] The reservoir once helped supply Lisbon fountains and now belongs to the EPAL Water Museum. [articleExtractPt] In the canopy, the Buçaco cedar is a remarkable landmark, measuring more than 20 metres across and recognised as a tree of public interest.

[narrativeExtractPt] On Saturdays, the garden also hosts a weekly organic-produce market. [narrativeExtractPt]
