Jardim Botânico de Lisboa, Lisbon

The Jardim Botânico de Lisboa is a botanical garden created for practical teaching and botanical research. Its story began when the Polytechnic School selected this site in 1859, and construction started in 1873 under the direction of Francisco Manuel de Melo Breyner and Andrade Corvo. Edmund Goeze guided the work as landscape gardener, followed by Jules Daveau, who shaped the palm avenue and devised water circulation through streams and cascades.

The garden opened in 1878 and brought together tropical species from New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, and South America. Look for the garden’s layered paths and mature planting, which express that deliberate scientific design. It became a National Monument in 2010, and reopened on the seventh of April 2018 after restoration work improved its water systems, paths, lighting, and other visitor facilities.
