Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin

The Hugh Lane Gallery is an art museum housed in Charlemont House, the mansion built for the Earl of Charlemont in 1763. Its story begins with Sir Hugh Lane, who opened the institution in 1908; it is recognised as the earliest known public gallery devoted to modern art. Lane died in 1915 aboard the Lusitania, before seeing the museum settled here.

The gallery moved into this house in 1933, and its collection now includes French art, contemporary Irish work, a room dedicated to Sean Scully, and the reconstructed London studio of Francis Bacon. A particularly unusual exhibit is that studio itself: its contents were taken apart in London and reassembled here in 2001. The building is currently closed for major refurbishment, announced for September 28, 2025.
