Hala Targowa Enjoy, Gdańsk
Hala Targowa Enjoy is a covered market hall opened on 3 August 1896, designed by Kurt Fehlhaber to bring food selling indoors. Its original 188 stalls mainly served meat and delicatessen, with produce, dairy, fish and baked goods also represented. The hall survived the fighting of 1945 with only part of its parapet missing, then escaped demolition when heritage protection stopped a supermarket scheme.
The most unexpected story lies beneath the trading floor: archaeologists uncovered remains of a Romanesque church from about 1170 and a churchyard containing more than 400 burials. Those discoveries are displayed in the basement. After renovation from 2001 to 2005, ownership passed to a property developer in January 2025, who invested 141 million złoty in its revival. Fresh-food counters now share the lower level with an exhibition about Gdańsk’s culinary traditions.
