Kraków’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a black-marble cenotaph on Matejko Square, beside the Grunwald Monument. Designed by Professor Wiktor Zin in 1976, it holds an urn of battlefield soil and bears names associated with Polish soldiers’ Second World War campaigns.

At the foot of the Grunwald Monument on Matejko Square is Kraków’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a cenotaph commemorating unidentified Polish soldiers who died on battlefields. Notice the marble pedestal: its bronze flame is kindled during commemorations. The present black-marble memorial was designed by Professor Wiktor Zin in 1976.

Beneath it lies an urn containing earth from Second World War battlefields where Polish troops fought. This monument began in 1925, when an anonymous donor had a completed inscribed slab delivered overnight beside the Grunwald Monument. Its dedication honoured the unknown Polish soldier who fell for the homeland between 1914 and 1920.

It became a focus for patriotic gatherings until German forces destroyed it, together with the Grunwald Monument, in November 1939. In 1946, an urn stood here on tall metal poles and received flowers and wreaths. The battle names engraved on the memorial—from Westerplatte and Warsaw to Tobruk, Monte Cassino, and Berlin—recall the far-reaching campaigns of Polish soldiers during the war.
