Gmach Towarzystwa Rolniczego, Kraków

Gmach Towarzystwa Rolniczego is a protected historic tenement at Plac Szczepański 8, on the corner of Świętego Tomasza Street in Kraków’s Old Town. Built in 1908–1909, it preserves agricultural figures on its façade and occupies a site with medieval, Gothic, and Renaissance traces.

At Plac Szczepański 8, where the building meets Świętego Tomasza Street, you are beside the Gmach Towarzystwa Rolniczego, a protected historic tenement in Kraków’s Old Town. It was designed by Sławomir Odrzywolski and Władysław Kaczmarski, then built across 1908 and 1909. This address already had a much older life.

A one-storey house stood here from the fourteenth century until its demolition in 1908. During that clearance, workers uncovered stones bearing Hebrew inscriptions, a Gothic doorway, and Renaissance carving—fragments of several eras concealed within the previous building. Follow the façade’s stone pilasters: at second-floor window level, seven carved figures represent agricultural labour, with three male and four female figures.

The shopfront level is marked by imposing shutters, while the wing facing Świętego Tomasza has the building’s sole balcony, placed at third-floor level. The building entered the heritage register on the thirteenth of July 1999, preserving this early-twentieth-century replacement—and the deep layers of the site beneath it.
