George's Street Arcade, Dublin

George's Street Arcade is an indoor market and shopping centre, with stalls and stores housed in a Victorian-style setting. Its red-bricked building opened in 1881 as the South City Markets. Lockwood & Mauson designed and built the complex, and its opening was conducted by Lord Mayor Sir George Moyers.

The occasion was promoted by wealthy property owners, yet no native Dubliners were included among the invited guests. In August 1892, fire destroyed the markets, leaving shopkeepers and stall holders without their premises or stock; no one died. William Henry Byrne then remodelled the interior, and local labour and craftsmen rebuilt the market in the same style.

Business resumed on 13 September 1894, and the arcade has traded continuously since. The arcade remains a compact piece of Dublin's market history, where the building's commercial purpose is still visible in its stalls and stores.
