El Xampanyet, Barcelona

El Xampanyet is a neighbourhood tavern and wine cellar on Montcada Street, in Barcelona. Its presence here is documented from 1898, when the premises already served that local purpose. The entrance has a simple glazed wooden frame with three sections, and a fixed wooden panel above carries the establishment’s name and founding date.

Inside, the restrained setting includes a marble-topped counter, an ice refrigerator, and glazed ceramic tiles with geometric motifs covering much of the walls. A wooden shelf displays a collection of old bottles, siphons, and casks. The venue has been run by Joan Carles Esteve since 1999, continuing the family’s third generation of management. It is recognised as a place of considerable interest and receives urban-planning protection as part of Catalonia’s cultural heritage.
