El Peix d'Or, Barcelona

El Peix d’Or is the monumental fish sculpture rising beside Hotel Arts at Barcelona’s Olympic Port. Its sweeping, abstract form belongs to Frank Gehry, who designed it as an architect and artist. The surface is made from interlaced sheets of golden stainless steel stretched over a pale metal framework, giving the fish a shimmering, airy presence.

The sculpture measures about 35 metres high, 56 metres long and 37 metres wide. It entered public view on 11 July 1992, as part of the Olympic Games. Take in the overlapping skin and the broad curve of the body: the work feels less like a solid animal than a huge metallic gesture suspended above the waterfront. Its scale is the surprise—an unmistakable fish rendered through structure, light and movement rather than natural detail.
