Dublinia, Dublin

Dublinia is a historical recreation museum set within the Synod Hall, a part of Christ Church Cathedral. Its subject is Dublin’s Viking and medieval past, brought to life through costumed performers who take on the roles of Vikings and medieval residents and invite you to participate. Around you, reconstructed buildings and street scenes create an immersive picture of earlier city life.

The attraction opened in 1993, then underwent a €2 million redevelopment in 2010. Its programme combines interpretation with performance, so the past is presented through people, places, and activities rather than display cases alone. In 2010, Dublinia welcomed over 125,000 visitors during the year, making this recreation a substantial part of the city’s heritage experience. The Synod Hall gives that recreated world its setting within one of Dublin’s best-known historic buildings.
