Dom Nad Bramką, Kraków

Dom Nad Bramką is a historic townhouse on Mały Rynek’s western side, separating the square from Plac Mariacki. Its distinctive ground-floor archway gives it its name. Built in the late seventeenth century, it replaced a site once occupied by vicars’ wooden houses and butchers’ stalls.

Dom Nad Bramką is the historic townhouse whose ground floor is pierced by the arched passage connecting Mały Rynek with Plac Mariacki. It stands along Mały Rynek’s western frontage, forming the edge between these two close-set Old Town spaces. That opening gives the house its name: “the House Above the Gate.”

But the route through here has a much older, more practical past. From the fourteenth century until the 1630s, this spot and the neighbouring Wikarówka held wooden homes for vicars of St Mary’s parish, alongside butchers’ stalls. The present townhouse rose in the late seventeenth century, after St Barbara’s Church had received its Baroque rebuilding.

It linked that church with the Wikarówka, which had been built sixty years earlier, completing the built barrier between Plac Mariacki and Mały Rynek. The passage makes the building serve as both a wall and a doorway: a compact piece of Kraków’s old urban fabric, shaped by church life, trade, and the need to move between adjoining squares. The house entered the heritage register on the seventeenth of February, nineteen eighty-six.
