Dennis Severs' House, London

Dennis Severs' House is a historical attraction at 18 Folgate Street, a Georgian terraced house dating from about 1724. Dennis Severs lived here from 1979 to 1999, gradually reshaping its interior into an imagined home for a family of Huguenot silk weavers. The rooms are set out as though their occupants have only just gone, so the house feels less like a conventional museum than a scene suspended in time.

Look at the half-eaten bread and the objects placed around the rooms: some are period pieces, while others were made by Severs himself. Each room also has its own smells and background sounds. One striking detail is a four-poster bed that Severs built from pallets and polystyrene. The house’s motto, Aut Visum Aut Non!, means that you either see it or you do not.
