De Hallen, Amsterdam
De Hallen is a cultural complex housed in a former tram depot, and its spacious passage now draws together cinema, food, shops, art, reading, hospitality and public events. The complex dates from 1906 and receives more than two million visitors each year. Along the Hannie Dankbaarpassage, you can move between the various venues without leaving the building complex; this public route also hosts markets, exhibitions, performances and activities for children.
The Filmhallen contains a cinema room fitted out with the interior of the former Cinema Parisien, once located on Nieuwendijk. That room previously stood for years in the Nederlands Filmmuseum at the Vondelparkpaviljoen. The passage gives this former transport building an unusually lively afterlife: industrial space has become a shared setting for film, food, culture and everyday neighbourhood activity.
