Curry 36, Berlin
Curry 36 is a Berlin snack bar known far beyond the city, with its original premises in Kreuzberg. Its name joins Mehringdamm 36, the address of the company’s earliest shop, with currywurst, its principal dish. The business began as a wooden cart selling sausages from a kettle, under the name Wurstmaxe.
Vera and Lutz Stenschke took it over in 1981. Today, the operation covers 200 m² and uses numerous fryers, roasting equipment and pans. Its sausages come from a butcher in Lichtenrade, and its guidebook reputation brings many visitors here.
The business also has locations at Hardenbergplatz, Berlin Hauptbahnhof and Warschauer Straße. One admirer is Tom Hanks, who has said he would like an apartment in Berlin within walking distance of Curry 36.
