Cripta de la Carcel de San Vicente, Valencia
This is the archaeological crypt of Saint Vincent, beneath a chapel long associated with the saint’s imprisonment. It lies near Valencia Cathedral, close to the Romanesque doorway and beside the Almoina archaeological complex. The chamber is Visigothic, preserved in good condition, with a Greek-cross plan and a vaulted roof.
Its beginnings are connected with the Visigothic cathedral of the sixth and seventh centuries, as part of that ecclesiastical precinct. The chapel above contains an altar and a Valencian tile panel showing the saint’s martyrdom. Local tradition placed the final episodes of Vincent’s life here and held that his burial was here. Look at the chapel entrance: paired Tuscan columns support a rounded arch, while a niche above contains a sculpture of Saint Vincent by Rafael Orellano.
