Cervejaria Trindade, Lisbon

Cervejaria Trindade is a restaurant housed in a former convent complex, and its atmosphere comes from that layered past. The establishment began here in 1836, after Manuel Moreira Garcia adapted the convent church, cloister, and old refectory for brewing and dining. In 1863, he commissioned Luís Ferreira to create tile panels showing the four seasons and the four elements.

The surviving tilework gives the rooms a decorative, almost theatrical character. The convent itself had been founded in 1294, destroyed by fire in 1704, damaged by the earthquake of 1755, and struck by another fire in 1756. Cervejaria Trindade now belongs to Lisbon’s cultural heritage, with a history that remains visible in the tiles surrounding your meal.
