Brama Herbowa, Kraków

Brama Herbowa is an entrance gate to Wawel Hill, and its heraldic decoration gives the structure its character. The gate stands at the hill’s northern approach. Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz is its architect.

It was built in September 1921 on the site of a nineteenth-century fortress gate demolished in May 1921. Look at the coats of arms set into the gate: nine represent Polish, Lithuanian, Ruthenian, and fief territories. That detail makes this compact passage a carefully composed historical statement, not merely an opening in the fortifications.

The heraldry gives the gateway a formal identity while preserving a connection with the lands represented by those emblems. Brama Herbowa is also protected as an immovable voivodeship monument in Poland.
