Bazylika Archikatedralna Trójcy Świętej, Gdańsk
Before you rises the Archcathedral Basilica of the Holy Trinity, a Roman Catholic church in Oliwa. Its long brick body belongs to Brick Gothic, a medieval manner shaped in brick rather than carved stone. The paired towers on the façade reach forty-six metres, their pointed crowns reconstructed after wartime destruction.
A richly worked portal from sixteen eighty-eight breaks the severe wall surface below. This church has endured fire, attack, rebuilding, and changing rank. A Cistercian monastery was founded here in eleven eighty-six; after a devastating fire in thirteen fifty, the church and monastery took on the form largely seen today during that century’s later decades.
Gdańsk’s mercenary force burned the abbey in fifteen seventy-seven, and rebuilding followed soon after. The Prussian authorities dissolved the Cistercian house in eighteen thirty-one. In nineteen twenty-five the church became Gdańsk’s cathedral, and in nineteen ninety-two it became the archcathedral of the new archdiocese.
Inside, the celebrated organ is the great surprise: its Rococo case carries moving angel figures with instruments and celestial emblems. The organ has ninety-six stops, five manuals, and a pedal keyboard, while its façade pipes preserve Wulff’s eighteenth-century work. This cathedral has held protected Historical Monument status since twenty seventeen.
