Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome

Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere gathers the neighborhood around a church whose story is carried by mosaics, reused stone, and layers of devotional art. It is dedicated to Mary and serves as Trastevere’s parish church. Across the façade, the porch belongs to Carlo Fontana’s redesign of seventeen oh two.

Above the porch, a medieval mosaic shows Mary seated with the infant Jesus, accompanied by women bearing lamps. The church’s present fabric largely comes from rebuilding commissioned by Pope Innocent the Second between eleven thirty-eight and eleven forty-three. Within, the nave keeps the plan of an older basilica, divided by granite columns salvaged from the Baths of Caracalla.

The apse is the great visual climax: its mosaic shows Christ placing a crown on the Virgin, with Innocent the Second included beside them and holding a model of this church. Beneath it, Pietro Cavallini’s scenes from Mary’s life date to twelve ninety-one. Seek out the Madonna della Clemenza as well: this encaustic panel of the Virgin and Child belongs between the sixth and ninth centuries and ranks among the oldest surviving medieval Marian icons. This remains an active parish and a destination for pilgrims, especially at the Assumption in August.
